A good installer should be able to explain the specific purpose of each proposed camera position — this one identifies faces at the front door, this one covers general activity in the garden, this one monitors the garage entrance. If the answer is vague or generic across every camera, the system may not be genuinely tailored to your property.

This question also reveals whether the installer has actually walked your property and considered its specific layout, or is simply proposing a standard package regardless of your home's particular entry points and blind spots.

Ask About Storage and Ongoing Monitoring

Confirm exactly how many days of footage the proposed system will realistically hold, and ask how you'll know if the recorder or storage develops a fault. A system that silently stops recording without any alert is far less useful than one that notifies you of a problem.

This is also worth confirming in writing, since 'storage included' can mean very different things depending on camera count, resolution, and recording mode.

Discuss Privacy and Neighbouring Properties

If your property is close to neighbouring homes or shares boundary walls, ask how camera angles will be set to avoid unnecessarily capturing neighbouring private space. A considerate installer should be able to discuss privacy zones or angle adjustments proactively, rather than leaving this entirely to you to raise.

This matters both for good neighbourly relations and, in some cases, for compliance with community or building regulations regarding surveillance of shared or neighbouring areas.

Ask directly what happens if a camera or hard drive fails within the warranty period — is a visit included, or a separate charge? Ask whether the installer will configure the phone app and walk you through reviewing and exporting footage, or leave that entirely to you to figure out.

A transparent installer will answer all of these questions clearly and specifically. Vague or evasive responses to any of them are worth treating as a warning sign before committing to a contract.
